Week 2: L.A.T.C.H Theory

This lecture focuses on Richard Saul Wurman’s L.A.T.C.H. theory, which describes five ways to organize information:
  • Location – Organizing information spatially.
  • Alphabet – Arranging content in alphabetical order.
  • Time – Sorting information chronologically.
  • Category – Grouping data into meaningful categories.
  • Hierarchy – Ordering information by size, importance, cost, etc.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H Infographic Poster

In exercise 2, we need to organize a group of information into a visual poster that combines and utilizes the LATCH principles (Minimum 4). We are required to use the digital photo editing/illustration software available to assemble the information into a LATCH infographic poster.

Requirements:
Size resolution: A4 Size

I decided to choose the 12 zodiac signs as the topic to complete this exercise. Below is the information that I gathered and listed in Doc. I want to include all of this information in my poster. I use L, A, T & C from the L.A.T.C.H principle which is Location, Alphabet, Time, and Category. Besides that, the visual reference that I downloaded online is also included in the Doc.

Digitise Process

After that, I started designing the poster. I chose to use Adobe Illustrator with a size resolution of A4 for the poster.

Fig 3.2 Original image of the starry sky

First, I start with the background. As the 12 zodiac signs are related to the starry sky, I want the background of my poster to be a darker starry sky with a gradient to black.

I downloaded the starry sky picture Fig 2.1 from the Internet and imported it into Illustrator. After that, I added a gradient layer to the original picture to achieve the effect I wanted.

After completing the background, since I couldn't find the ideal materials for the 12 zodiac signs, I decided to start drawing them.

Next, place them in the right place according to the location information and sort them alphabetically.

After that, add the date of birth for each sign.

The last step is to put the 12 zodiac signs together according to the four elements according to the fourth information. The four elements are air sign, earth sign, fire sign, and water sign. The elements are also arranged in alphabetical order.

Reflections

In this exercise, I explored the LATCH (Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy) method to organize information effectively. Understanding how different structures influence user perception and comprehension was an insightful process. I also realized that how LATCH principles can be applied beyond just information design—whether in UI/UX, storytelling, or even interactive media.
