Project 1: Mobile Application  Proposal

Instructions

Project 1: Mobile Application Proposal

We were required to create a proposal for the mobile application project. We need to redesign an existing app that is found unsatisfactory in terms of the user experience or interface design and it is subject to preliminary approval by the module coordinator.

We need to do surveys, interviews, market studies and research on the selected topic. The document should also include key features of the mobile application and provide a clear flowchart of the app.

Process of Draft Proposal:

Fig 1.1 Apps for Testing

In the first week, we have to choose three applications that have issues and need to improve. I tried to find the applications that I haven't used or low ratings. Then download them for testing, such as AirAsia Move, Sushi King MYS, Eup-GPS, and TGV. There are other apps too, I am one of the users such as Starbucks MY, and MyUnifi.

Last, the three options that I chose were the MyUnifi app, Starbucks MY and Senheng app. I discovered that there were a lot of issues that need to improve among these three apps, especially Starbucks MY and Senheng. In the testing phase, it is not only important to focus on user interface issues, but also on the user experience.

For the draft proposal, it needs to be careful of the review and ratings that were chosen. It needs to ensure that the reviews were helpful in improving the app. Most of the reviews of the apps are talking about log-in problems and didn't receive OTP or email notifications. These depend on the situation of the users' mobile, internet issues, or how users operate.

Process of Finalised Proposal:

After completing the draft of our proposal, we have to finalize it for the week 4 presentation. We only need to focus on one application in the proposal.

Fig 2.1 Process of Finalised Proposal

Originally, I was going to choose the TGV app as my final proposal but it is too common and so many seniors do it. Then I decided to choose the Senheng app which is not as generic as the TGV app. I found out that the Senheng app has a lower rating in the app store which is 3.5 out of 5 and it has a space for improvement.

The SenHeng app offers a convenient way for users to shop their products but the app is complicated for users. The app tries to combine too many features in the app but it has no clear guidance. Users need to spend a lot of effort to understand how the app functions which makes them feel frustrated and fatigued easily.

The competing apps that I choose to analyze are Shopee, Lazada, and Banggood. After the presentation, Mr. Zeon suggested me analyze the Khind app as the bussiness models of Shopee and Lazada were a little bit different from the Senheng app. So I add the additional part for the Khind app in my final proposal.

Feedback:

Week 2:
I need to make sure the reviews and ratings are helpful to improve the app and highlight the key sentence for easier reading. Besides user interface problems, it is also important to focus on user experience weaknesses. Complete the rating & reviews and conclusion part.

Week 3:
Everything looks good, I can go ahead for prepare the presentation.

Week 4:
It was suggested to add the Khind app to compare with the Senheng app as their business models are more similar. I should be confident with the content that is prepared for the presentation when presenting.

Reflection:

In this project, I explored the redesign of the Senheng mobile application, focusing on improving its user experience and interface design. Initially, I selected three potential apps to analyze MyUnifi, Starbucks MY, and Senheng, but ultimately chose Senheng due to its lower app store rating and greater need for improvement. The project highlighted the usability and user-centered design principles. Through application testing, research, and user feedback analysis, I identified key pain points in the app that led to a bad user experience. The overall process was challenging as it required a deep understanding of usability and practical skills in app design. This project not only enhanced my skills in mobile app design but also provided valuable lessons in analyzing applications.
