Project 1: Audio Editing Exercises

Instructions

Project 1/ Exercise 1: Audio Editing Exercises

In this exercise, we are required to sync the audio and the video given using Adobe Premiere Pro. The video needs speech and sound effects only, no background music.

We have to watch the video on Premiere Pro timeline first and list down each scene on a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet needs to list out each sound effects for each scene. Mr. Martin divided us into groups so that we could work together to complete this part quickly.

Dialogue Recording & Download Sound Effects

Fig 1.1 Records Dialogue

First, I recorded the dialogue on my phone and uploaded them to Google Drive. After that, based on the sound effects that my group had listed in a spreadsheet, I searched for suitable ones on websites and downloaded them. There are two types of sound effects, that are hard sound and ambient sound. I also uploaded them to Google Drive.

Import To Adobe Premiere Pro

Fig 1.2 Importing Sound Effects & Dialogue

Before starting to edit the video, I imported all the sound effects and dialogue to Adobe Premiere Pro. Then arrange them into the timeline and sync them to the video. There were 3 characters in the video so I placed the dialogue individually on 3 tracks and the sound effects were on 4 to 7 tracks.

After placing all of them into the timeline, I started editing the voice from female to male. There are three characters in the video, two females and one male. I need to edit the male voice part by applying audio effects. (Audio Effects→Pitch Shifter→Semi Tones)

Moving on, I started adjusting the volume level of the sound and dialogue. The ambient sound was suggested at below -20dB, dialogue was suggested at between -6dB and -12dB, and hard sound effects were dependent on the other sounds. Additionally, I have used keyframes in the dialogues to create changes to the volume level.

I also applied the audio effects to the ambient sounds which was crossfade effect, to create a smooth transition between the two ambient sounds. Finally, The video was completed.

Project 1/ Exercise 2: Sound Shaping With EQ

In exercise 2, we are required to record our voice for 5 seconds and edit it in Adobe Audition. We need to apply sound effects to the voice and edit it into five different effects which are:
  1. Voice of phone call
  2. Voice coming from inside of closet
  3. Voice of toilet / bathroom
  4. Underground cave
  5. Alien / Orc voice
Before started editing, Mr Martin helped us practice in class.

After recording my voice for 5 seconds, I uploaded it to Google Drive and imported it to Adobe Audition. I created a new multitrack session to edit the voice.

I used the Parametric Equalizer in Filter and EQ to edit the voice of phone call and coming from inside the cloth. I adjusted the bass, treble and midrange of the sound to make it realistic.

Next, I needed to edit the sounds of the toilet/bathroom and the underground cave. Reverb was a great effect to help me edit those two sounds.

Last, I needed to edit the sound to turn it into an alien sound. I did this by applying a Flanger from the Modulation. I applied the Flanger twice, once for the Buzzed sound effect and once for the Synthetic Yo-Yo, and adjusted their characteristics.

Reflection

Through this lecture, I have learned how to place sound and apply audio effects in Adobe Premiere Pro. This learning process has been quite fascinating because I can record video dialogues and learn how to edit them. Additionally, I also explored various sound effects online. When I used headphones to hear the sound during the editing process, I found that I could perceive the sounds more clearly and pay attention to them. It was a different experience compared to using earphones. Exercise 2 was a very special learning experience for me. In my impression, editing sound was complicated, and I never thought that it would be so easy to edit an ordinary sound into a different sound effect.  I enjoyed the editing process very much. Overall, this learning experience equipped me with practical skills in audio editing and also deepened my understanding of the role sound plays in visual storytelling.
