synchronous Class Materials Reflection

Week 1:
Fig 1.1 Quiz Result, Week 1 PDF

Reflection:
I have gained a fundamental knowledge of cinematography, including the basic elements of shot size, camera angle, and composition. These elements are important in filmmaking as they could decide the quality of a film.

Week 2:
Fig 1.2 Quiz Result, Week 2 PDF

Reflection:
I have learned about the three-act story structure in storytelling. It is composed of the setup, confrontation, and resolution. They effectively guide the narrative flow. Act two is the longest part as it covers the core of the protagonist’s journey.

Week 3:
Fig 1.3 Quiz Result, Week 3 PDF

Reflection:
Storyboarding is an important process in pre-production. A storyboard helps achieve effective shooting and ensures a smoother production process. Additionally, it also helps to save time and resources.

Week 4:
Fig 1.4 Quiz Result, Week 4 PDF

Fig 1.5 Quiz Result, Week 4 PDF

Reflection:
The production process is divided into three main phases: pre-production, production, and post-production. The production stages and crews in filmmaking are vital to the success of the film because they need teamwork and collaboration in the filmmaking process.

Week 1 Task

1. Documents Editing Exercises

Since we are all first-time users of Adobe Premiere Pro, Mr. Martin has prepared the exercise to help us become familiar with it. The exercise is document editing. There are two videos and we need to arrange the footage on the timeline in proper order.

Fig 2.1 Arrange The Footage (First Video)

The shots of the first video are in order, so just merge them into one video.

Fig 2.2 Arrange The Footage (Second Video)

The sequence of the second video has been scrambled, so I need to arrange the order of the clips.

Week 2 Tasks

1. Shooting Video Practise

Mr. Martin explained to us the knowledge of cinematography in class. Afterward, we were asked to work in pairs to practise the framing shooting exercise. After shooting the videos, we need to merge them together and mention the shot size in the video.

There are eight frames that we have to shoot:

  1. Close-Up Shot
  2. Frontal Medium Close-Up (soft background)
  3. Frontal Medium Shot (soft background)
  4. Extreme Close-Up Shot
  5. Side Angle Medium Shot (soft background)
  6. ¾ Angling Medium Close-Up Shot (with blurry/soft  foreground)
  7. Low Angle Wide Shot
  8. Eye-Level Medium-Wide Shot

Fig 3.1 Type The Caption

First, I type the caption in the video. Then, I open the safe margins to help me arrange the text and ensure it's not too close to the edges of the video.

Fig 3.2 Adding Effect

After that, I also added cross-dissolve effects at the beginning and end of each text.

Fig 3.3 Adding Text Background

I think the captions will look better with a text background so I used the rectangle tool to add a light blue text background and adjusted the opacity. Then, I simply repeated the same process for each video, and it was done.

2.  Editing Video Practise

Same as the editing process from the first week, the difference is we have to watch the original video before starting edit. We need to cut the extra parts of the footage and apply effects to specific ones.

Fig 4.1 Adding Effect

In this section, I've already cut out the extra footage and arranged them. I just need to apply a cross-dissolve effect to make the man in the frame disappear.

Week 11: Practical - Stop Motion Editing Exercise

Before starting our final project, Mr. Martin provided us a stop-motion editing exercise to help us with the project. In the final project, we can choose to use Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects to edit the video.

Pratise in Premiere Pro

Fig 5.1 Stop Motion Editing (PR)

After separating all the sequences into different folders, I go to Premiere Pro and create a new project, setting the frames per second in 1920x1080 24/25. Before importing the photo sequences, I also adjust the Timeline setting in Preferences. I change the "Still Image Default Duration" to 5 seconds to 2-5 frames. If the movement is too fast, it can be changed to other frames.

Fig 5.2 Stop Motion Editing (PR)

Next, ensure I have a toggle on insert and overwrite sequences as nests or individual clips. This will help to ensure that nothing goes wrong in the editing. Then, we can start to edit our video.

Pratise in After Effects

Fig 5.3 Stop Motion Editing (AE)

Same as Premiere Pro, I have to adjust the Import setting under Preferences before importing the footage. In here, I have changed the sequence footage to 24 frames per second.

Fig 5.4 Stop Motion Editing (AE)

When importing the footage, ensure that the three boxes under sequence options have been chosen

Fig 5.5 Stop Motion Editing (AE)

In here, I have adjusted the Time Stretch in the Time setting. Then, we can start to edit our video.

Feedback

Week 1:

Remember to update your exercises progress in Blogger.

Week 2:

For the soft background, you have to zoom in on your phone camera then will get a better soft or blurred background.

Week 3:

The answer of those questions doesn't need the long explanation, especially the first question.

Reflection

Through this lecture, I have gained an understanding of video production. In the week 2 task, I found that shooting a good video is not as easy as I thought. Creating a good video is more challenging than shooting. Besides that, this lecture gave me a chance to watch a movie while completing the task. After observing the movie, I found that I was able to experience some details in the movie more delicately, such as the sound effects and the movement of the movie, the roles of the supporting characters, the micro-expressions of the characters, and more. This was a good experience for me.
