Typography / Task 3: Type Design & Communication
2023.11.21 - 2023.12.12 Week 9 - Week 12
INSTRUCTION
I began to set the guidelines for acender, cap height, x-height, baseline, descender and spacing between a single letter because I apply the stencil cut design. Then, I created all the letters usisng line segment tool but the straight lines are thicker than horizontal lines.
I have named my font as "Niew Font", adopted the homophony of new. Then I
exported and installed it.

Task 3: Type Design & Communication
INSTRUCTION
Task 3: Type Design & Communication
Before starting task 3, we need to prepare graph paper and 3 marker pens
(must be 3.0 above). Then explore 3 different writing styles for each of the
3 pens on graph paper. Besides that, we are required to do a detail
dissection of letters H, o, g, and b from 10 fonts provided.
Detail Dissection
I chose to use Futura Std to do detail dissection. Through the process, I
found that the vertical width of letter H was bigger than horizontal width.
And the vertical width of letter b was same as letter H. The
top half of letter g and letter b were made by 3 circles, some of them
are oval.
Sketch
I sketched out 9 different writing styles on graph paper. My preferred
sketches are #1, #7, and #8. I like sketches #7 and #8 because of the curves,
they look like gummy candy.

After receiving feedback from Miss Low, I decided to go with sketch #9 as it
was not similar to others.
Digitise

Miss Low said that I needed to explore more about the punctuation marks and
adjust the letter details. After that, I have completed my first outcome.
In week 11, after receiving feedback from Miss Low, I adjusted the width
between the letters by using letter o as standard. Then, I modified the
punctuation marks.

Font Lab
Let us move to the next step, the Font Lab section. I have transferred the
letters to the Font Lab 7. I have kerning for the space between the
letters. However, I realized that some of my letter lines look crooked so I
cleared the extra nodes and aligned them.

Poster
After installing my font on the computer, I discovered four words and made a
poster with black text on a white background. After that, I rearranged the position of the words, and created the poster required (White Text and Black Background)

FEEDBACK
Week 9
General Feedback: When we are taking the sketches, we should make sure there is enough light.
Specific Feedback: My sketch #9 was suggested to apply stencil cut top at left and bottom at right.
Week 10
Specific Feedback: Miss Low has adjusted my letters details. Letter l
should be at ascender and the letter t straight line should be at cap
height. I was suggested to make the letter s wider or the letters n
and c narrower. I need to explore more at the punctuation marks. The
design of punctuation marks should be similar with the letter.
Week 11
General Feedback: The middle of letter t and the dot of letter i
should be above the x-height line.
Specific Feedback: My width between the letters are not the same. I
need to adjust them to the same width, I use letter o as the standard.
Adjust the gap to be wider between the letters and the width of the
punctuations. The punctuation mark(commar and dot) was suggested be
lighter.
Week 12
General Feedback: Make sure the artboard has a height and width of
1000pt and all the letters have been applied to the pathfinder before
importing to the font lab.
Specific Feedback: Looks fine. I need to clear the extra nodes, and
align horizontal and vertical lines to ensure they are straight. Make
sure the word is on the baseline and x-height.
REFLECTION
Experience
In the beginning, I thought it would be a fascinating task when I knew
that we would create our own typeface. But later, I discovered that it
was so difficult and there were a lot of processes. I spent many times
on modifying and adjusting the details of the typeface, as the people
said, "Soft fire makes sweet malt".
Observations
I noticed that although the letters all look the same, the details (line
width) are different. The spacing between the letters also affects the
visual look and feel. For example, if the letter spacing is too large,
the composed words will be difficult to understand.
Findings
Through this task, I found that the fonts designed by myself, from the
beginning of digitisation until exporting in the Font Lab, this process
requires us to constantly think innovatively and have to spend time and
energy to confirm the details in order to create satisfactory works.
FURTHER READING
|
| Typography Systems Book |
This book was written by a designer, Kimberly Elam.
|
| Dilatational System |
The dilatational system dilates or expands from a central point by
several circles. It is similar to the radial system.
Example we usually can see:
1. Iris of eye
2. The waves when a pepple dropped into water
3. Sound waves
|
| Dilatational System, Thumbnail Variations |
The text was arranged in the dilatational system can turned upside down
easily or placed in an awkward position for reading. The
dilatational system expands from a central point, creating dynamic
forces that extend outward and rotate around the center. To
simplify and clarify the composition, grouping of elements is often
necessary.
Initial Phase: Unfamiliar with the positions of text on circular paths.
Exploring the unusual compositional textures and spaces.
Intermediate Phase: The designers are familiar with the system. The work
focus on grouping lines of text and organization.
Advanced Phase: The compositional control is achieved. Alignments are
created and the compositions are more orderly and simplified.
|
| Structure of Dilatational System |
Dilatational compositions change with circle arrangement. All the
elements are arranged on a single centered axis. Touching circles
results in different compositions, combining dilatational and radial
systems characteristics as lines move towards tangent point.
|
| Axis of Dilatational System |
The coming of a strong axis makes the work a hybrid of both the axial and
dilatational systems. The axis organizes the text allowing the lines to relate
to each other along the vertical line. The axes in the bottom work are
near the format's edges and have a similar function.
